LoRa: Long-range networks
LoRa, short for long-range, is the physical network that allows for devices to transmit information from sensor to sensor, and LoRa is the hardware which enables this trade-off of data. One may ask, “Don’t computers already transmit information quickly? Why do we need sensors? Why do we need LoRa networks?”
Devices expend an extensive amount of power to operate, while LoRa networks only use small amounts of power to transmit data. Instead of over-complicated networks using large amounts of computing power, LoRa streamlines the process and simplifies the transmission into tiny bits of information from sensor to sensor.

Chirp spread spectrum (CSS) in LoRa
Chirp spread spectrum is the technology that enables the transmission of information in LoRa and LoRaWAN. One can think of it as the way the network data is connected through long-range radio-frequency technology, similar to the way dolphins and bats communicate. These frequencies allow for a wide range of use cases.
What makes these chirp pulses robust is that they are easy to implement, consume little power and can make the network seamlessly synchronize multiple functions. Because of the bandwidth of these chirp pulses, CSS can transmit information over a wide area without suffering from interferences that other transmission technologies may have.
All of these qualities make CSS the perfect technology to use with LoRa and LoRaWAN.
